Hydaburg is located on Prince of Wales Island in southeast Alaska. We are just 36 miles north of Ketchikan, which is the largest town in the immediate area. Ketchikan, though, is a full four hours travel from Hydaburg. One hour by car, and three by ferry through the beautiful inside passage. Other nearby towns include Klawock and Craig about an hour away by car.
Prince of Wales Island information
Getting here. Alaska Airlines is your best bet for air travel. You can also take the Alaska Marine Highway ferry from Bellingham Washington or Prince Rupert BC. When you land at KTN head out the doors and across the street to the ferry terminal. The ferry leaves every half hour, costs $6.00 per person and takes about five minutes to go across to the main island. You’ll want to call a taxi to take you to your lodging or to the IFA ferry if you’re continuing to POW the same day. There are many lodging options in Ketchikan with Best Western being the most convenient location. Be sure to arrange for someone to pick you up in Hollis when you get off the ferry. Unless, of course, you brought your own vehicle. Just call the school, we’ll be there.
There is a SEARHC clinic in Hydaburg with nurse practitioners working under the supervision of a physician. There is a larger SEARHC clinic in Klawock and Peace Health in Craig and Peace Health Medical Center in Ketchikan.
Hydaburg has a small convenience store and a branch of the Alaska Commercial company. AC stores also serve the Craig and Klawock communities. You will probably want to make the drive to the bigger stores in those towns.

There is fuel available from the city offices in an emergency. It’s easier to fill up in Klawock every time you go grocery shopping. Black Bear is our favorite.
